چکیده

As more MEMS-based products and applications move from research to commercialization, there is a growing array of choices for design and analysis software tools. Increasingly, mainstream CAD and CAE tools can be relied on to deliver robust capabilities previously available only with specialized, often expensive, MEMS-focused tools. Given the technical and business advantages of mainstream tools for some MEMS applications, serious consideration can be given to adding them to the MEMS designer’s and analyst’s toolbox. This paper identifies some of the considerations in choosing a MEMS CAD/CAE tool, and provides some real applications of mainstream tools successfully used in MEMS design and analysis. INTRODUCTION After several decades spent largely in the research domain, MEMS-based products are finally being commercialized at a furious pace. These products can require extensive design and analysis, with capabilities that include [1]: • 3D construction and visualization • material properties databases • simulation tools for (potentially coupled) thermal, mechanical, electro-magnetic, and fluid analyses • manufacturing process simulation, including lithographic and etch processes, process tolerances

Comprehensive Electromechanical Analysis of MEMS Variable Gap Capacitors

This paper presents a comprehensive case study on electro-mechanical analysis of MEMS[1] variable capacitors. Using the fundamental mechanical and electrical equations, static and dynamic behaviors of the device are studied. The analysis is done for three different modes, namely: dc (static mode), small signal ac and large signal regime. A complete set of equations defining dynamic behavior of ...

Design Tools and Issues of Silicon Micromachined ( Mems ) Devices

This paper describes the design and design issues associated with silicon surface micromachined device design. Some of the tools described are adaptations of macro analysis tools. Design issues in the microdomain differ greatly from design issues encountered in the macrodomain. Microdomain forces caused by electrostatic attraction, surface tension, Van der Walls forces, and others can be more s...

General MEMS Process Physics Simulation and its Applications

Commercial CAD tools for MEMS have significantly contributed to the growth that the MEMS industry has experienced over the past two years by reducing development cycles and enabling the more rapid release of mature MEMS products. Unfortunately, the CAD for MEMS industry has focused primarily on device performance (for example, mechanical response due to electrostatic loading), with a concentrat...
